Why a community matrimony website works
National sites such as Shaadi.com, BharatMatrimony and Jeevansathi serve a very wide audience. A site for one community, region, language or group can ask the questions its members actually care about, and can be run by people that families already know.
That second point matters most. On a matrimony site, families share personal details about their sons and daughters. They share more readily with an organisation they recognise, which is why community groups, temples, associations and established marriage bureaus are well placed to run one.
Plan the profile around your community
The profile form is the heart of the site. Too few fields and members can't judge a match; too many and families abandon registration halfway. Decide early which details are required, which are optional and which members can hide.
- Basics: name, age, height, location, marital status and who is creating the profile (self, parent, sibling or relative)
- Community details: sub-community, gotra, mother tongue or other fields relevant to your group, kept optional where members are sensitive about them
- Education and work: qualification, profession, employer type and city of work
- Family: parents' occupation, siblings and family values, in the words families use
- Lifestyle: diet, and other preferences your members commonly ask about
- Horoscope: rashi, nakshatra and birth time as optional fields, since not every family follows them
- Partner preferences: age, location, education and other filters the member cares about
Privacy and photo protection
Privacy is the first thing families ask about, especially for daughters' profiles. Members should control who sees their photos, phone number and horoscope, and the defaults should lean towards privacy.
Control who sees what
- Photos visible to all members, only to paid members, or only to people whose interest the member has accepted
- Phone number and email hidden until both sides accept an interest
- Chat that opens only after mutual acceptance
- An option to hide the profile temporarily, for example after an engagement
- A simple way to delete the profile and its photos completely
Make photos harder to misuse
Watermarks with your site's name, blurred previews for non-members and blocked right-click downloads make casual copying harder. Be honest with members, though: no website can stop someone from taking a screenshot. Say this in your safety tips so members choose their photo settings knowingly.
You are also handling sensitive personal data. If you serve members in India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act applies to how you collect, store and use it. Take legal advice on your consent wording, privacy policy and data retention.
Verification and moderation
Fake profiles damage a matrimony site faster than anything else. Combine automatic checks with human review, and be clear with members about what each check does and does not prove.
Checks at sign-up
- Mobile number confirmed by OTP, and email confirmed by link
- Every new profile and photo waits for admin approval before it goes live
- Optional ID review by your team before a verified badge is shown
- A clear label for what the badge means, such as phone verified or ID checked
Ongoing moderation
Give every profile a report and block button, with reports landing in a queue your team reviews daily. Watch for common warning signs: members who ask for money, refuse any video call, push to move off the platform immediately, or use photos that appear elsewhere online.
Publish a safety tips page and link to it from chat. Advise members to meet in public places, involve family, and never send money to someone they met online.
Membership plans that feel fair
Most matrimony sites let members register and search for free, and charge for features that involve contact. That way your profile base grows, and members pay once they have found people worth contacting.
- Free: create a profile, search, send and receive interests
- Paid: view contact details, start chats, see who viewed your profile, highlight your profile in search
- Assisted service: a relationship manager who shortlists profiles for the family, for those who prefer the traditional bureau approach
Keep safety features free for everyone: reporting, blocking and privacy controls should never sit behind a paywall. State the plan duration, what it includes and your refund policy before payment, and accept UPI and cards.
Building trust and your first members
A matrimony site with few profiles feels empty, so plan how you will reach your first members before launch. Community organisations have an advantage here: they can announce the site at events, in newsletters and in community WhatsApp groups.
- Help families create profiles in person at community events, or over a phone call
- Show who runs the site, with a real address, phone number and the organisation behind it
- Answer queries quickly, on WhatsApp if that is what your members use
- Avoid promises about finding a match; describe what the site offers instead
- Share how you verify and moderate profiles, in plain language
