OTAs and direct bookings do different jobs
Portals such as MakeMyTrip, Booking.com and Airbnb are good at one thing: putting your property in front of travellers who have never heard of you. That reach is worth paying for, and few independent properties can replace it.
The problem is paying commission on guests who were already looking for you. Many travellers find a hotel on a portal, then search its name to check the website. Returning guests and people who heard about you from a friend do the same. If your site can't take a booking, they go back to the portal.
Put a real booking engine on your website
A phone number and an enquiry form are not enough. A guest who wants to book at night will not wait for a call back the next morning. Your website needs a booking engine that shows live availability and takes payment.
- Live availability by room type for the chosen dates, updated the moment a room is booked or blocked.
- Clear room pages with real photos, bed type, maximum occupancy and amenities.
- Rate plans such as room only, with breakfast, refundable and non-refundable.
- The full price up front, including taxes such as GST, so the total at checkout matches what the guest saw first.
- A short checkout that works on a phone, with only the details you truly need.
- Instant confirmation by email and WhatsApp, with a booking voucher and directions.
Avoid double bookings
If you sell the same rooms on several portals, connect your booking engine to a channel manager so a booking anywhere reduces availability everywhere. Without it, someone has to update every calendar by hand, and sooner or later the same room gets sold twice.
Rate parity basics
Rate parity means offering the same room at the same price across your own website and the portals. Some OTA contracts include parity clauses, and the terms differ by portal and by country, so read the rate clauses in each contract before you price direct bookings differently.
Even with matching prices, you can still give guests a reason to book direct:
- Breakfast, airport pickup or late checkout included for direct bookings.
- A free room upgrade on arrival when one is available.
- Flexible cancellation compared with a non-refundable portal rate.
- Offers for returning guests, shared by email or WhatsApp rather than published openly.
Say these benefits clearly on your website, next to the booking button, not buried on an offers page.
Payments and cancellation rules
Guests in India expect to pay by UPI, cards or net banking. International travellers need foreign cards to work. A payment gateway in your property's name handles both and sends the money to your account.
Full payment, advance or pay at hotel
Full payment suits non-refundable rates and peak dates. An advance with the balance at check-in works well for homestays and resorts with longer stays. Pay at hotel lowers the barrier, but expect more no-shows, so limit it to trusted dates or returning guests.
Write the policy in plain words
State when a booking can be cancelled for free, what is refunded after that and how long refunds take. Show it on the room page and on the voucher. Clear rules prevent most disputes before they start.
Reviews and trust on your own site
A guest booking direct is trusting you instead of a big brand. Your website has to answer the question: is this place real, and will I get what I see?
- Use recent, real photos of each room, bathroom and view, not stock images.
- Show your full address, a map and a phone number that someone answers.
- Ask guests to leave a Google review after checkout, and reply to every review, good or bad.
- Link to your Google reviews from the website rather than copying hand-picked quotes.
- Keep house rules, check-in times and ID requirements easy to find.
Get listed in Google hotel search
When people search for your hotel on Google or Google Maps, they often see prices from several sites side by side. Google lets properties show their own website as a booking option in these results, through a connectivity partner such as a booking engine or channel manager that supports it. Ask your provider whether they offer this.
Before that, set up and verify your Google Business Profile. Add correct contact details, check-in and check-out times, amenities and photos, and link the profile to your booking page rather than your home page.
Turn every stay into a direct repeat guest
A guest who came through a portal is still your guest once they arrive. With their consent, save their contact details at check-in, send a thank-you message after checkout and share a returning-guest offer for their next trip.
Common mistakes to avoid: a website that is slow on mobile data, a booking engine that opens on a different-looking site, prices that jump at checkout, and no reply to WhatsApp messages for hours.
Getting your hotel booking website built
We build hotel and resort booking websites with a direct booking engine, live availability, seasonal rates, add-ons, online payments and an optional channel manager connection. Travel agencies selling packages may prefer a travel agency website instead.
Cost depends on the number of properties and room types, channel manager or PMS connections, and languages and currencies. Tell us about your property in the form below and we'll send a fixed quote before work starts.
